Kei Nishikori Advances to Second Round of HPP Open

Kei Nishikori, ranked 132nd in the world, defeated N. Alvarez Varona (Spain), the qualifying winner and No. 384 ranked player, in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, making it through the first round of the Challenger tournament for the second consecutive week.

Nishikori, 34 years old and former world No. 4, won three matches at the Slovak Open 2024 (Slovakia/Bratislava, Indoor Hard, ATP Challenger) last week, and won three matches at the Caribbean Open (Puerto Rico/Palmas del Mar) last June. He advanced to the top four in an official tournament for the first time in about 1 year and 5 months.

This week will be his third consecutive tournament appearance following the Erste Bank Open (Vienna, Austria, indoor hard, ATP500) and the Slovakia Open 2024.

This will be his first meeting with 23-year-old Alvarez Varona, who he will face in the first round of this tournament.

The winner of this match will face No. 7 seed J. Kim (Switzerland) in the second round. Kim defeated A. Sherbay (Jordan), the winner of the preliminary round and ranked 232nd in the world, in the first round to advance to the tournament.
