Rivals on Ice: India and Pakistan’s Thrilling Hockey Encounters – A Look Back at Their Last 5 Matches

September 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

The Men in Blue have been on a roll over Pakistan recently.

India maintained their unblemished record by beating Pakistan 2-1 in the 2024 Asian Men’s Champions Trophy group stage at the Mochi Training Base in Hulunbuir, China. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored his 200th career goal in the previous match, added two more goals in the win.

With this result, India took a firm lead in the points standings, while Pakistan, who recorded two wins and two draws in this tournament, suffered their first defeat but managed to advance to the semi-finals along with India.

The fierce clash between the two hockey rivals took a dramatic turn when a heated argument broke out between the players following a strong challenge by Pakistan’s Ashraf Waheed Rana on Jugraj Singh. In the dying minutes of the match, as Pakistan pressed hard for an equaliser, Jugraj collapsed after clashing with Rana inside the Indian circle.

Harmanpreet Singh and Jarmanpreet Singh immediately confronted Rana and responded with harsh words before the on-field referee, Pakistan captain Ahmad Butt and other players intervened to calm the tension and restore order.

India will now face South Korea in the semi-finals on September 16, 2024.

Despite the defeat by Pakistan, they still managed to reach the semifinals alongside India. However, the win allowed India to continue their dominance over Pakistan since 2016. In their last match at the Hangzhou Asian Games the previous year, India had defeated Pakistan 10-2. A few months earlier, India had also defeated Pakistan 4-0 at the 2023 Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai.

Pakistan has the upper hand in the overall head-to-head record against India, with 82 wins compared to India’s 67. However, in recent history, India has dominated, winning 15 of the last 17 meetings, with the remaining two ending in draws. Pakistan’s most recent win over India dates back to the 2016 Gwahati South Asian Games final.

Let’s take a look at the last five matchups between the hockey rivals.
