The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an internal investigation after a deputy was filmed using a dating app during a fatal standoff in Jurupa Valley.
Footage captured by a CBS Los Angeles news helicopter showed a deputy from the Special Enforcement Bureau scrolling through what appeared to be a matchmaking site while positioned just feet away from an armed and barricaded suspect. The officer was crouched behind a bearcat armored vehicle, where he was seen viewing profiles and swiping left before eventually putting the device away.
The incident occurred on April 8, 2026, following an intense high-speed pursuit of a grand theft suspect driving a white Cadillac. During the chase, the sheriff’s department K-9 unit attempted to deploy a grappler
net system, a device designed to entangle the rear wheels of a vehicle to force it to a stop. Reporting indicates that the deployment of the system was botched.
The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle slammed head-on into a thick concrete wall on Antigua Drive, near a school, causing the front end of the car to crumple. This crash led to a standoff that lasted approximately three hours.
Departmental Investigation
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that it is reviewing the deputy’s conduct, stating that the behavior captured on video does not align with the agency’s professional requirements.
This behavior does not reflect the standards, expectations, or policies of our department. We have initiated an internal investigation and will take appropriate action based on the findings. The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to professionalism and holding our employees accountable.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson
The standoff concluded when the suspect died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Incident Details
The Special Enforcement Bureau officer involved is described as part of an elite unit within the department. The viral nature of the helicopter footage brought immediate attention to the officer’s actions during the critical window of the tactical operation.
The deployment of the grappler system, which was intended to end the pursuit safely, failed to stop the white Cadillac before the high-speed collision. The subsequent three-hour operation involved multiple officers and the use of the bearcat vehicle for cover as they attempted to resolve the situation with the armed suspect.
The internal investigation is ongoing to determine the exact nature of the deputy’s phone use and whether other policies were violated during the operation.
