Rob Orlando, a four-time CrossFit Games veteran known as the Strongman of CrossFit, died on April 6, 2026, at the age of 50. His death followed a battle with stage 4 cancer that began in early 2025, as reported by The Barbell Spin and BoxRox.

Orlando was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in his lower jaw and the lymph nodes in his neck on January 20, 2025. One day prior to the diagnosis, on January 19, 2025, Orlando had set a personal best in his powerlifting total with 1,525 pounds.

Medical Treatment and Recovery Efforts

On February 13, 2025, Orlando underwent a 13-hour surgical procedure to remove a portion of his lower jaw. During the surgery, bone was harvested from his fibula and grafted into his mouth to replace the removed cancerous section.

The surgery resulted in significant physical complications, including paralysis and numbness in the lower right side of his face, nerve damage in his right shoulder and trap, and a complete loss of feeling in his left foot.

Despite these challenges, Orlando returned to the gym three weeks after the operation. Six weeks following the surgery, he performed a back squat of 500 pounds while still lacking sensation in his left foot. By March 2025, his treatment regimen expanded to include weekly chemotherapy, daily radiation, IV hydration sessions, and both physical and speech therapy.

Athletic Career and Contributions

Orlando was a prominent figure in the early development of CrossFit. He competed at the CrossFit Games four times, including three consecutive years from 2009 to 2011 as an individual athlete and one appearance in the 40-44 Masters division.

Beyond his competitive career, Orlando founded Hybrid Athletics. He is also credited with designing a piece of workout equipment called the Pig, which made its debut at the 2013 CrossFit Games.

During his absence for medical treatment, the coaches and members of Hybrid Athletics managed the operations of the gym.

Community Impact

Following the announcement of his death on Instagram, several high-profile figures in the CrossFit community shared tributes. Athletes including Dan Bailey, Chris Spealler, Annie Sakamoto, Rory McKernan, Jason Khalipa, and Lee Steggles expressed their condolences to the Orlando family and described him as a legend and a kind individual.

Orlando is the third known non-Masters individual male CrossFit Games veteran to pass away. Other individuals include Lazar Djukic, who died during Event 1 of the 2024 CrossFit Games, and Chad Wilkinson, who qualified for the 2009 Games but did not compete.
