Rob Reiner won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series at Emmy Awards Night 2, taking home the trophy nine months after his death. The late actor received the posthumous honor for his work on season 4 of FX’s The Bear, where he played restaurant franchiser Albert Schnur. Schnur acts as a mentor to Ebraheim, played by Edwin Lee Gibson, advising him on expanding The Original Beef sandwich walk-up window.
The Bear Role and Production Background
During the fourth season of the Christopher Storer-created series, line cook Ebra convinces Carmy, played by Jeremy Allen White, to franchise the sandwich shop and places a call to Albert with the news. In that conversation, Ebra tells Albert they are in business and closes the call with the line As you wish,
which serves as a nod to Cary Elwes in Reiner’s 1987 comedy The Princess Bride.
Reiner initially hesitated to take the role before joining the cast. According to an interview Reiner gave to People magazine during the press tour for the This Is Spinal Tap re-release, Christopher Guest’s wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, encouraged him to accept the part after she appeared in earlier seasons. Reiner told People that acting was fun and worry-free, noting that you just show up and do your work.
Competition and Prior Emmy History
In the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category, Reiner prevailed over fellow nominees Michael J. Fox and Brett Goldstein for Shrinking, Hamish Linklater for Widow’s Bay, Christopher McDonald for Hacks, and Connor Storrie for Saturday Night.
This marks Reiner’s second career Emmy win. He previously won a Best Supporting Actor Comedy Series Emmy in 1978 for playing Michael in the CBS series All in the Family.
Following Reiner’s death, The Bear paid tribute to him in the series finale titled The Original Beef of Chicagoland.
While season 5 of The Bear dropped on Hulu, season 4 competed in this year’s Emmy cycle, picking up eight nominations overall and adding to the series’ total of 21 Emmy wins.
