Robert Carradine Dies: Lizzie McGuire Cast Pays Tribute to Late Star

February 24, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Robert Carradine, a veteran actor whose career spanned decades and touched multiple generations. Carradine, best known for his roles in Revenge of the Nerds and as Sam McGuire in Disney’s Lizzie McGuire, died on February 24, 2026, at the age of 71. His family confirmed that his death was a result of suicide following a nearly 20-year battle with Bipolar Disorder.

News of Carradine’s passing prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from his former co-stars and colleagues. Hilary Duff, who played his daughter Lizzie McGuire, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, expressing her shock and sadness. “This one hurts,” she wrote. “It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’ll be forever grateful for that. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him.”

Hallie Todd, who portrayed Jo McGuire, Robert Carradine’s on-screen wife, described him as a generous, loyal, and brave friend. “He was a champion for the people he loved and always wanted the best for us,” Todd wrote in her own Instagram post. She emphasized the close bond that developed between the cast’s families during the show’s run, stating that her friendship with Carradine and his family was “probably my most treasured personal gift from working on Lizzie McGuire.”

Jake Thomas, who played Matt McGuire, Lizzie’s younger brother, remembered Carradine as “one of the coolest guys you could ever meet.” He highlighted Carradine’s multifaceted talents, noting that he was not only a skilled actor but also a musician and director, and, above all, “family.”

The Carradine family released a statement acknowledging the profound sadness of his loss and bravely addressing his long struggle with Bipolar Disorder. “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him,” the statement read. “We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness.” The family requested privacy as they navigate this difficult time.

Robert Carradine’s career began in 1971 with a guest appearance on Bonanza. He quickly established himself as a versatile actor, appearing in notable films such as The Cowboys (1972), Coming Home (1978), Mean Streets (1973), The Big Red One (1980), The Long Riders (1980), Revenge of the Nerds (1984), The Player (1992), and Django Unchained (2012). His role as Lewis in Revenge of the Nerds cemented his place in 1980s pop culture, while his portrayal of Sam McGuire introduced him to a new generation of fans.

Beyond his film work, Carradine maintained a consistent presence on television, with credits including The Fall Guy, ER, NYPD Blue, and The Practice. He was a working actor, consistently finding roles that showcased his range and charisma.

Carradine came from a distinguished acting lineage. He was the son of the acclaimed actor John Carradine and the brother of actors David and Keith Carradine. His daughter, Ever Carradine, is also an actress. Keith Carradine spoke to Deadline about the family’s decision to openly discuss Robert’s battle with Bipolar Disorder, stating, “We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. We see an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul.” He further described his brother as “profoundly gifted” and expressed the family’s deep sense of loss.

Robert Carradine’s death serves as a stark reminder of the often-hidden struggles faced by individuals battling mental illness. His family’s courageous decision to share the details of his passing underscores the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and encouraging open conversations about seeking help. He is survived by his children, Ever, Marika Reed Carradine, and Ian Alexander Carradine, his brothers Keith and Christopher Carradine, and his extended family. His contributions to the world of entertainment, and the warmth he brought to countless viewers, will be deeply missed.
