Grow a Garden on Roblox Cultivates Massive Online Success
The video game industry has a new heavyweight champion: Grow a Garden. This unassuming farming-themed game on the Roblox platform recently achieved a peak of 21 million concurrent users (CCU),a milestone rarely seen in the gaming world.
Dom Tait,an analyst with Omdia, noted the game’s surprising popularity. On June 21, more than 21 million players together tended to their virtual plots, planting seeds, harvesting crops, trading goods, and even engaging in a little virtual theft.
This figure dwarfs the previous record held by Fortnite, which reached 15 million CCU during a special event in 2020. Tait acknowledged that while some platforms don’t publicly release CCU numbers, Grow a Garden’s record is confirmed for roblox.
Roblox, launched in 2005, has evolved into a massive online gaming platform, particularly popular among younger audiences. Users can create their own games and experience those developed by others. The platform operates on a free-to-play model, generating revenue through in-game purchases, advertising, and royalties.
Rapid Development, Relaxing Gameplay
Grow a Garden emerged in late March, the creation of a teenage developer. Splitting Point Studios quickly acquired a stake in the game. Janzen Madsen, CEO of Splitting Point, told game file that the original creator developed the game in approximately three days.
Tait attributes the game’s success to its calming and straightforward nature.”There’s not much danger… You just sort of go on and do things and just sort of have a gentle experience,” he said. The game offers a sense of progression and satisfaction as players watch their gardens flourish, even when they’re offline.
The game’s accessibility is another key factor, especially for Roblox, were a significant portion of users are under 13.
Financial Impact and Industry Concerns
While the exact earnings of Grow a Garden’s developers remain undisclosed, Roblox reportedly pays out a significant portion of in-game revenue to creators. The platform stated it paid out $923 million to developers in 2024.
“It is big money,” Tait said. “So there’s a little bit of nervousness in the industry about, ‘Is Roblox taking away the audience that would otherwise have spent hundreds of pounds on a console and bought my console games?'”
Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games (Fortnite), recognizes the massive audience and opportunities that platforms like Roblox and Fortnite provide for creators.
Controversies
Roblox has faced criticism, including accusations of inflating player counts and insufficient protection against online predators. The company has refuted these claims, asserting its commitment to user safety and financial clarity.
