Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2026: Phil Collins, Mariah Carey & More Nominated

February 25, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame unveiled its list of 17 nominees for the class of 2026 on February 25, 2026, a remarkably diverse collection spanning genres from rap and R&B to heavy metal and Britpop. The announcement signals a continued effort by the Hall to broaden its scope and recognize a wider range of musical influences.

Among the artists vying for induction are Phil Collins, Mariah Carey, and Lauryn Hill – each representing significant milestones in popular music. Collins, known for hits like “In the Air Tonight” and “One More Night,” has already garnered eight Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1985 for No Jacket Required. Hill’s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains a landmark achievement, breaking ground as the first hip-hop album to receive the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1999.

Carey, a perennial favorite with 19 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, is a returning nominee, having been considered in both 2024 and 2025. Also re-appearing on the ballot are Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, The Black Crowes, Oasis, and Sade. The inclusion of these artists reflects the Hall’s willingness to revisit influential acts that may have been previously overlooked.

This year’s ballot features ten first-time nominees, highlighting a conscious effort to acknowledge artists who have long been deserving of recognition. Joining Collins, Hill, and Carey as newcomers are Jeff Buckley, Melissa Etheridge, INXS, New Edition, Pink, Shakira, Luther Vandross, and the Wu-Tang Clan. This influx of fresh faces promises a particularly competitive induction process.

The Wu-Tang Clan’s nomination is particularly noteworthy, representing a significant moment for hip-hop within the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their 1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang, is widely considered a game-changer, influencing generations of rappers and solidifying their place as innovators in the genre. Similarly, INXS, who dominated the late 1980s with hits like “Need You Tonight,” “Devil Inside,” and “New Sensation,” represent a key era in pop music.

The list also includes artists representing diverse musical traditions. Shakira, celebrated for her ability to seamlessly blend Latin music with rock and pop, and Luther Vandross, a soul-jazz vocalist who sold over 25 million albums and delivered timeless hits like “Here and Now” and “Any Love,” bring unique perspectives to the ballot. Vandross, who passed away in 2005, is recognized for his enduring impact on R&B and vocal performance.

Jeff Buckley’s inclusion is also significant, acknowledging the lasting influence of his critically acclaimed 1994 debut album, Grace, despite his untimely death in 1997. Melissa Etheridge, a two-time Grammy winner known for songs like “Come to My Window” and “I’m the Only One,” adds another layer of depth to the nominees.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s chair, John Sykes, emphasized the diversity of the nominees, stating, “This diverse list of talented nominees recognizes the ever-evolving faces and sounds of Rock & Roll and its continued impact on youth culture.” This statement underscores the Hall’s commitment to reflecting the changing landscape of popular music.

The voting process will involve over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals. Inductees will be announced in April, with the official induction ceremony scheduled to take place in the fall. The ceremony will also include the announcement of inductees selected through special committee categories: Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award.

To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to nomination. The class of 2025 saw Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Soundgarden, Joe Cocker, Salt-N-Pepa, The White Stripes, Carol Kaye, Nicky Hopkins, Lenny Waronker, Thom Bell, and Warren Zevon inducted, setting a precedent for recognizing a broad spectrum of musical contributions.

The 2026 nominees represent not just individual artists, but also the evolution of music itself. The inclusion of acts like the Wu-Tang Clan and Lauryn Hill signals a growing recognition of hip-hop’s profound influence, while the continued consideration of artists like Mariah Carey and Billy Idol demonstrates a respect for enduring legacies. The coming months will determine which of these influential musicians will take their place among the legends enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
