LeBron James delivered a pivotal performance as the Los Angeles Lakers secured a 101-94 victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series on April 21, 2026, taking a commanding 2-0 series lead heading back to Houston.

James scored 28 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, while adding eight rebounds and seven assists. His timely production, highlighted by a wide-open dunk with 55 seconds remaining that extended the Lakers’ lead to seven points, proved decisive in sealing the win despite the return of Kevin Durant for the Rockets.

Durant made his Houston playoff debut but was limited by the Lakers’ defensive strategy, scoring just three of his 23 points in the second half. He finished with 23 points and nine rebounds, shooting 6-of-7 in the first half before the Lakers adjusted to disrupt his rhythm.

Marcus Smart contributed 25 points with five 3-pointers and seven assists, while Luke Kennard added 23 points for Los Angeles. The Lakers overcame the absences of Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves through a balanced team effort, with James acknowledging the collective responsibility: “When we have two big guns out like we have, we’ve all got to pick up our play.”

Houston struggled offensively, shooting just 40.4% from the field and making only seven 3-pointers. Alperen Sengun led the Rockets with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Jabari Smith Jr. Scored 18 points and Amen Thompson added 16, but the team failed to sustain consistent scoring pressure against Los Angeles’ defense.

The Lakers executed their game plan effectively on both ends of the floor, correcting mistakes from Game 1 and engaging in a sustained defensive battle. James noted the team’s improved execution: “We executed the game plan offensively and defensively, shored up some of our mistakes from Game 1, and just got into a dogfight.”

With the series now shifting to Houston for Game 3 on Friday, the Rockets face a 2-0 deficit and must find ways to counter the Lakers’ defensive adjustments and regain offensive rhythm if they hope to extend the series.
