Roger Black, the former Olympic silver medalist and world champion in the 4x400m relay, recently underwent open heart surgery. Black, 58, said the operation, which replaced his aortic valve and repaired his aortic root, took place three weeks ago.
Black has been monitored for a heart condition since age 11.Despite the diagnosis, he achieved considerable success in athletics, including an individual silver medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also anchored Great Britain’s 4x400m relay team to gold at the 1991 and 1997 World Championships.
Before his surgery, Black had annual check-ups at Southampton General Hospital. Last summer’s examination revealed a deterioration, prompting the procedure.Black noted that he experienced no obvious symptoms.
