Noir Thriller ‘But First, The Burning’ Gains Backing from ‘Lunchbox,’ ‘Manto’ Producers
Roh Films Germany is returning to India for its first local production since the acclaimed 2013 film “The Lunchbox,” partnering with First Ray Films India on a new noir thriller titled “But First, The Burning.” The project is set to be directed by Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija and will star Anshuman Jha.
France’s En Compagnie des Lamas, the production company behind the film “Manto,” led by Sandrine Brauer, is also confirmed as a French producer. Further details regarding the collaboration are expected to be finalized at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
“But First, The Burning” centers around two brothers who share a single identity in a struggling town. What begins as a minor deception, intended to improve their chances of survival, quickly escalates into a dangerous game of secrets where only one can emerge victorious.
Devashish Makhija brings a distinguished filmography to the project, including internationally recognized works such as “Joram,” “Bhonsle,” and “Ajji.” He is also preparing for the release of his Netflix thriller, “Gandhari,” later this year.
Anshuman Jha has established a versatile career with roles in films like “Love Sex Aur Dhokha,” “Chauranga,” and “Lakadbaggha.” He will represent the film at the Berlin European Film Market, serving as both the leading actor and an executive producer.
Jha expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Integrity. Conviction. And unadulterated vision – is the basis of this partnership. We are thrilled to have Roh and Lamas on board for this film which would mark our seventh production. And probably the most ambitious one with one of my favorite cinema makers in India – Devashish.”
Benny Drechsel of Roh Films Germany commented on the script, saying, “I really think that ‘But First, The Burning’ is probably the most compelling script from India since ‘The Lunchbox.’”
Sandrine Brauer of Lamas added, “I’m very proud to join forces with the creative duo formed by Anshuman, and Devashish. Their film casts a lucid, uncompromising, yet deeply necessary light on the spiral of violence. Devashish’s previous films already reveal a distinctive and promising voice, with a rare ability to take us on powerful and compelling cinematic journeys.”
Production is scheduled to commence in October, following the release of Jha’s action sequel, “Lakadbaggha 2.”
