Rolling with a Twist: Gimcheon’s Kimbap Festival Defies the Norm

A unique kimbap-themed festival is held in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in clear autumn weather.

It is said to have attracted a lot of attention on social media as a counter-concept aimed at the MZ generation, who first think of “Kimbab Heaven” when hearing the name Gimcheon.

Yes, I’m at the Gimcheon Gimbap Festival.

Actually, speaking of Gimcheon, it doesn’t seem to have much to do with kimbap. What’s the atmosphere like there?

Yes, the festival venue is literally crowded.

As you can see behind me, there are many citizens lining up at each kimbap stand.

You can also easily find families laying out mats and enjoying the autumn breeze here and there.

This festival, which was held for the first time this year, literally started from the opposite idea.

I was worried about what young people would think when they thought of Gimcheon and Gyeongbuk.

Since it is not a big city, it is not well known by people who live in other areas.

So, when they think of Gimcheon, many people first think of “Kimbab Heaven”.

With a reverse idea, we decided to organize a festival with kimbap as the theme.

The response was explosive.

As soon as it was announced, the festival became a hot topic on social media as a unique festival, and even today so many visitors came.

Gimcheon City chose the theme of the festival as an autumn picnic.

I focused on the fact that when you think of a picnic, you naturally think of kimbap.

Famous kimbap restaurants from all over the country have gathered at the event venue, and a unique kimbap using Gimcheon specialties such as walnuts, plums and black pork is also presented.

You can also taste various snacks such as tteokbokki, ice cream and fried foods, which are inseparable from kimbap.

There’s also a contest where you can make your own kimbap, and word is that the winning kimbap will be available in convenience stores soon.

The weather really feels like autumn, so it might be a good idea to have a family picnic with delicious kimbap or snacks.
