Rolling with Caution: Uncovering the Best Portable Strollers Amidst a Sea of Price Disparities
Portable strollers are an essential childcare product for going out with infants and toddlers, and interest among consumers is increasing. However, objective comparative information between products on durability, ease of use, safety, etc. is lacking. Therefore, the Consumer Agency conducted a test evaluation of the quality (basic/fabric quality, durability, etc.) and safety of eight major brands on the market.
According to the Korea Consumer Agency (Director Yoon Soo-hyun), all products had excellent durability and met relevant standards in terms of basic and fiber quality, safety, etc. as a result of the test evaluation. However, there were differences in ease of use, price, etc. between products, so careful checking is required when purchasing a product.
(Basic quality) All products met the safety standards for the basic quality that a stroller should have, including appearance defects, driving performance, backrest load capacity, seat belt, footrest and leg support strength, and anti-folding locking device.
(Fiber Quality) All products met the relevant standards in terms of fiber quality, including color fastness (friction, water, washing, sunlight), tear strength, and resistance to sweat and liquids, of the fiber material of the seat, back, and sunshade areas.
The durability of the stroller’s driving and locking devices was excellent, with all products showing no damage or deformation even under harsh conditions that were twice the safety standard (150,000 times and 200 times).
Six out of eight products could be folded and unfolded with one hand and the backrest angle could be adjusted, and two products folded automatically with a light push after unlocking with one hand, which was convenient.
The length of the sunshade ranged from 61 to 89 cm, with the Genie S (Waiup) product being the longest at 89 cm, and the Flextab 3 (Tabo) product allowing for height adjustment.
As a result of checking the safety of hazardous substances in areas that can come into contact with the baby (seats, seat belt buckles, etc.) and whether parts of the safety bar cover came off, all products were found to meet the relevant standards.
In terms of tip-over stability, all products met safety standards, but consumers needed to be careful because the stroller could tip over even on a flat surface if a 3 kg load was hung on the separately purchased and installed handle hanger.
When folded, the size of the Yoyo 2 6+ (Stokke) product was the smallest at 18cm x 44cm x 52cm, and the weight of the Newquid 2 (Inglesina) product was the lightest at 6.2kg (excluding the safety bar). The product had the most functions at 4.
The warranty period for Airplus (Jules) products is the longest, with a basic warranty period of 2 years and an additional 8 years (excluding consumables such as wheels and seats) upon registration of the genuine product.
Six out of eight products incorrectly indicated mandatory labeling information such as age and weight for use by complying with overseas safety standards, or omitted indication of continuous use time, requiring improvement.
Seven products required improvement as they did not provide accurate information on weight (excluding footrest, including safety bar, etc.) despite being portable.
The Korea Consumer Agency recommended improvement of labeling to seven companies that had incorrect information on age of use and weight, omitted information on continuous use time, and did not provide accurate information on product weight.
Product prices ranged from 312,000 won to 826,500 won, with a maximum difference of 2.6 times between products, and the FlexTab 3 (Tavo) product was found to be the cheapest at 38% of the highest priced product.
