Trier Exhibition Examines Marcus Aurelius’s Enduring Wisdom

A new exhibition in Trier, Germany, delves into the life and philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and philosopher-king. Running from June 15 to November 23, 2025, the joint exhibition hosted by two Trier museums explores Aurelius’s “Meditations” and their surprising relevance to contemporary issues of leadership and governance. The Marcus Aurelius exhibit aims to inspire reflection on society and the individual’s role within it.
Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180 AD, faced numerous challenges, including wars, economic hardship, and the Antonine Plague. His personal reflections, later published as “Meditations,” have resonated with readers for centuries, offering insights into stoicism, virtue, and the pursuit of a meaningful life.His writings offer a “treasure trove” of wisdom applicable to manny of life’s challenges, according to Marcus Reuter, director of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier.
Viola Skiba,director of the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift in Trier,notes that the exhibition’s themes have gained unexpected urgency in today’s crisis-ridden world. The question of what constitutes good leadership, a central concern for Marcus aurelius, remains highly relevant.

Aurelius, a proponent of Stoicism, valued equanimity and believed in the power of the individual mind.Reuter explained that Aurelius’s contemporaries likely did not view him primarily as a philosopher. His image as a philosopher-king emerged after the posthumous publication of his “Meditations.”
Skiba said that good governance, according to marcus Aurelius, is guided by wisdom, justice, prudence, and moderation, with a focus on the common good. Reuter suggested that Aurelius would likely not have considered Donald Trump a good leader, based on these principles.
While acknowledging Aurelius’s historical context, including his acceptance of slavery and unequal rights, Reuter emphasized that the emperor strived for just judgments and prioritized the state’s interests. The Porta Nigra in Trier, a famous landmark, was constructed during Aurelius’s reign as part of the city’s defensive wall.
Despite his wealth and power, Marcus Aurelius lived modestly and even auctioned off personal assets during times of financial crisis. His reflections on the meaning of life continue to resonate with modern audiences, offering inspiration and guidance.
