Romania Braces for Record-Breaking Floods: Danube River Surge to Hit 9500 mc/s by Month’s End
Romania Prepares for Severe Flooding on the Danube River
Romania is bracing for significant flooding on the Danube River, with estimated flows reaching maximum values of 9,200-9,500 mc/s on September 28-29, according to Apele Române.
INHGA forecasts indicate a substantial increase in the Danube flow, reaching 8,500 mc/s on September 25, nearly double the current value of 4,200 mc/s and well above the September multi-year average of 3,800 mc/s.
Flood Protection Measures in Place
Downstream from the Gruia hydrometric station, flood protection works are being prepared to ensure the safe transportation of the floods, which are expected to last up to 7 days.
Romanian Water teams from the 7 Water Basin Administrations are closely monitoring the 1100 km defense line and transmitting data from the 18 hydrometric stations for forecasting.
Flooding in Hungary
In Hungary, the Danube waters continued to rise on Thursday, prompting the suspension of ferry services. The water overflowed the lower quays of the capital Budapest, threatening to reach the tram lines, subway, and the Senedd building, located on the riverbank.
