Romania Joins EUR 1.5 Billion European AI Infrastructure Initiative
Romania Joins European Consortium to Build AI-Powered Innovation hubs
bucharest, Romania – Romania is stepping onto the global stage of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, joining a European consortium to develop cutting-edge computing infrastructure powered by AI. This ambitious project, with a total budget of €1.5 billion, aims to establish seven “AI factories” across europe, driving innovation in industries ranging from healthcare to agriculture.
The consortium, spearheaded by Spain’s Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), brings together partners from Romania, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey. Romania’s participation is spearheaded by the National Institute for research and Development in Informatics (ICI Bucharest).
With a €198 million investment, the initiative will focus on delivering high-value AI services tailored to specific industries, including public management, healthcare, biotechnology, finance, agriculture, energy, and media.
romania will play a key role in three core objectives:
- Developing and Delivering Advanced AI Services: ICI Bucharest will contribute to creating specialized AI services designed to meet the unique needs of target industries.
- Enhancing Supercomputing Capabilities: The project will bolster the EuroHPC JU MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, integrating advanced AI computing capabilities, specialized software, and a vast data warehouse.
- Building an Experimental AI Platform: Romania will help establish a state-of-the-art platform optimized for AI applications, enabling the testing and development of emerging computing technologies.
The BSC AI factory project is a meaningful step towards establishing a robust AI ecosystem in Europe. By focusing on practical applications in areas like climate change, healthcare, and public sector digitalization, the project highlights the EU’s commitment to leading the global AI revolution.
This collaboration underscores Romania’s growing prominence in the field of AI research and development, positioning the contry as a key player in shaping the future of this transformative technology.
