Romania Signs $6.4 Billion Deal for F-35 Fighter Jets Amid Rising Security Threats
Romania has signed a significant contract worth $6.4 billion with Lockheed Martin for 32 F-35A Lightning II stealth aircraft. This decision responds to increased security threats from Russia and concerns over the Ukraine war’s impact on Europe.
Lockheed Martin stated that adding the F-35 to the Romanian Air Force will enhance NATO’s deterrence capabilities, providing vital operational advantages.
This deal marks one of the largest defense procurements in Romania’s history. The F-35 Lightning II is recognized as a leading fighter jet globally. With this purchase, Romania becomes the 20th country to acquire the F-35.
Romania’s process to obtain the aircraft began over a year ago. In April 2023, the Supreme Council of Defence of the Country (CSAT) approved the purchase, and the Romanian Ministry of Defense sought parliamentary approval in September.
Romania joins several other European NATO allies in purchasing the F-35, including Belgium, Denmark, and Norway. “By 2030, we expect the F-35s to be operational in Romania,” said US Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec during the signing ceremony. In the meantime, Romania will continue to use its F-16 fighter jets while establishing a training program for the F-35.
The European F-16 Training Center, opened by Lockheed Martin in cooperation with the Romanian and Dutch governments, will help prepare Romanian pilots for their missions effectively.
The Romanian Air Force currently operates 17 F-16 A/B jets, which were previously used by Portugal. Romania has also agreed to purchase 32 used F-16s from Norway as a temporary solution until the F-35s are delivered.
“This order will advance Romania’s security both nationally and as part of NATO,” emphasized the US ambassador. As part of NATO, Romania will enhance air policing efforts, reinforcing its security role within the alliance.
Modernizing Romania’s Military
The F-35 acquisition is part of Romania’s broader military modernization plan. Romania is also purchasing 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks from the United States and likely 300 to 500 K2 Black Panther tanks from South Korea. Additionally, Romania plans to buy 54 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers from South Korea. This military upgrade addresses the security threat posed by Russia.
Romania’s military chief, Gheorghiță Vlad, underscored the need for readiness against potential aggression from Russia. He warned of risks in Moldova and the Western Balkans if the conflict escalates.
Due to its close proximity to Ukraine, Romania has experienced direct threats. Recently, a Russian drone nearly struck Romanian territory, leading to heightened security measures. Romanian border guards have faced multiple airspace violations from Russian drones, and wreckage from missiles aimed at Ukraine has been found within Romania’s borders.
These incidents have prompted Romania to adopt a more proactive security strategy to safeguard its national interests.
