Record-Breaking Pilgrimage and Institutional Collaboration

The Jubilee 2025 officially concluded on November 20, 2025, with the closing of the Holy Door of St. peter’s Basilica by Pope Leo XIV, attended by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. The year-long event, initiated by pope Francis and continued by Pope Leo XIV, drew an unprecedented 33,475,369 pilgrims to Rome from across the globe, according to official figures.

The event peaked in early August with over one million young people participating in a major gathering. The success of the Jubilee is being attributed to a high level of coordination between various institutions, a strategy dubbed the “Jubilee method,” which officials hope to replicate for future large-scale events.

Security operations: A “Country System” Approach

Rome’s Commissioner Roberto Massucci emphasized the comprehensive security measures implemented throughout the Jubilee. He stated that the security operation was the result of a collaborative effort involving over 70,000 personnel from various agencies, including the police, carabinieri, financial police, local police forces, civil protection services, and municipal organizations like Atac (Rome’s public transport company), Ama (Rome’s waste management company), and Ares 118 (Rome’s emergency medical service).

Massucci highlighted that the guiding principle of the security plan, outlined in 11 service ordinances, was “hospitality.” This approach aimed to balance robust security protocols with a welcoming environment for pilgrims.

Looking Ahead: 2033 and beyond

With the conclusion of the Jubilee 2025,attention now turns to the next Holy Year, scheduled for 2033,which will commemorate two thousand years since the Redemption. The Vatican and Italian authorities expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the 2025 Jubilee, viewing it as a prosperous exhibition of inter-agency cooperation and effective event management.
