A City Buzzing with Anticipation
Hong Kong is experiencing a surge of excitement as it hosts the 2025 Saudi Super Cup, a tournament headlined by football icon Cristiano Ronaldo. Thousands of fans have descended upon the city, eager to catch a glimpse of the Portuguese superstar, who arrived last Thursday and has already made appearances, including visits to his CR7 Life Museum
at the K11 Musea shopping center.
Economic Ripple Effect: Restaurants Prepare for a Boost
The arrival of the Saudi Super Cup isn’t just a sporting event; it’s a potential economic driver for Hong Kong. Restaurant operators near the Hong Kong Stadium are anticipating a significant increase in business, with some forecasting a jump of up to 30 percent. The tournament officially kicks off today, Tuesday, August 19th, and will run through saturday, August 23rd.
Christy Hung, manager of Yuga, a local cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style cafe) near the stadium, explained the optimism. We have arranged more manpower for the night [of the Saudi Super cup] but business fluctuates a lot,
she saeid, adding that previous events were impacted by rain, driving customers towards restaurants closer to MTR stations.
The Weather Factor: A cloud Over Potential Gains?
Despite the enthusiasm, local businesses are keenly aware of the potential impact of Hong Kong’s unpredictable weather. Rainfall could divert foot traffic away from stadium-adjacent eateries, sending fans seeking shelter and dining options closer to public transportation hubs. Hung noted that rain significantly affects business, as patrons tend to favor restaurants near MTR stations during inclement weather. She recounted a previous experience where increased staffing for a match was offset by rainy conditions and a subsequent downturn in customers.
