Roots from Jonquière in Rwanda
Saguenay Entrepreneur Aims to Inspire Diversity Through Construction
JONQUIÈRE, Quebec – Mathieu Gaudreault, a Saguenay-born entrepreneur, is on a mission to change perceptions of the region and demonstrate the potential for success for individuals from diverse backgrounds. Gaudreault, who operates a construction business, emphasizes that Saguenay is no longer a small village but a place of prospect for all.
“The people of Montreal do not have the image of the Saguenay that I would like them to have,” Gaudreault said. “We are no longer a village… there is diversity. I come from diversity and do business here as much as in Montreal.”
gaudreault aims to use his personal story to inspire others in the province, highlighting that anyone, nonetheless of their background, can achieve success in the region. He recounts a childhood experience where he was singled out as of his race, but emphasizes that times have changed.
“I grew up in Saguenay and, when I was at school, the teacher had made me rise so that the others touch my hair. This is no longer it today,” he said. “But despite all the challenges I have experienced, it is possible to go into business and make the region shine.”
From Policing to Entrepreneurship
Initially aspiring to be a police officer, Gaudreault worked in Montreal, hoping to promote diversity within the police force. However, the role took a toll on his mental health, leading him to pursue entrepreneurship.
He began by collecting debris, eventually specializing in construction debris removal and obtaining the necessary licenses to become a specialized contractor. This led to the creation of Demco, a construction company that Gaudreault established in Montreal.
After establishing demco as a prominent Black-owned business in Montreal’s construction sector, Gaudreault turned his attention back to his home region. He partnered wiht Samuel Leblond to launch LSCO Construction in jonquière, leveraging his Montreal experience to build a strong foundation for the company.
Regional Presence and Values
Gaudreault maintains a strong connection to Saguenay, regularly visiting family and supporting local organizations. LSCO Construction, such as, recently organized a raffle to benefit the SPCA in Jonquière. Gaudreault primarily handles the administrative aspects of the business.
“We are present both on construction sites and socially in the region. It is anchored in my values and those of Samuel, since we are proud of our region,” Gaudreault said.
He believes his presence in Montreal provides a significant advantage, allowing him to bring new ideas and innovations to Saguenay. The opportunities in Montreal also allow him to promote the region on a national and international scale.
Eyes on rwanda
Gaudreault, proud of both his regional and African roots, is now considering expanding his entrepreneurial endeavors to Rwanda, his country of birth. He envisions establishing a company there to further showcase his pride in his heritage. While still in the planning stages, he is confident in his ability to make it a reality.
“I want to give back to life, both for my Saguenay community and those Rwandan and Montreal,” Gaudreault said. “I believe that fundamentally, in my entrepreneurial journey, the real wealth is to restore all the achievements, all the knowledge and learning to his community.”
Afropreneur Gala
Gaudreault is a participant in the Afropreneur Gala, a competition recognizing regional companies owned or co-owned by entrepreneurs from the black community. He expressed surprise at not having heard of such a competition while in saguenay and hopes to raise awareness to encourage other black entrepreneurs to build strong networks.
He aims to win the gala to demonstrate the possibilities for entrepreneurs in the region and inspire them to pursue their goals. If he wins, Gaudreault plans to bring the trophy to Jonquière as a symbol of shared success and regional pride.
Gaudreault advises aspiring entrepreneurs to expand their networks and seek guidance from others. “Don’t be afraid to contact people!” he said. “Approach your inspirations, there is no entrepreneur who will laugh from another who embarks on business. Ask for advice.”
