Cameroon Celebrates International Day of Peace Amidst Challenges

Cameroon marked the International Day of Peace in a unique way this year.

On September 16, 2024, the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, presided over a special flag-raising ceremony on the esplanade of his ministry. This event, held amidst tension and division, is part of the celebrations taking place from September 16 to 21, 2024.

During the ceremony, the minister showcased a symbolic tree of peace, highlighting the values of silence and solidarity once cherished by the Cameroonian people. This gesture holds special significance in a country where peace seems to be an increasingly distant ideal.

Challenges to Peace and Social Cohesion

Cameroon currently faces significant challenges in maintaining peace and social cohesion. The English-speaking regions of the country, specifically the North-West and South-West, are embroiled in a fratricidal conflict between the Cameroonian armed forces and armed separatist groups seeking independence. This protracted conflict has resulted in violence, human suffering, and displaced thousands of people.

The Minister of State emphasized the importance of rebuilding a peaceful environment where all Cameroonians can live in security and dignity through this symbolic flag-raising ceremony.
