McIlroy Remains in Contention at Dubai Invitational
Rory McIlroy positioned himself for a potential victory at the Dubai Invitational with a third-round 68 on Saturday, putting him within striking distance of the lead.
mcilroy trails leader Nacho Elvira by three strokes heading into Sunday’s final round at dubai Creek Resort. Elvira also shot a 68 on Saturday, maintaining a two-shot advantage over the field.
Ireland’s Shane Lowry, England’s Marcus Armitage, and South Africa’s Dylan Frittelli share second place.
friday’s round proved challenging for McIlroy, who struggled to a 74 with five bogeys. He began Saturday with a birdie but followed it with a bogey. He then rallied with three birdies on the back nine to stay in contention.
McIlroy has a strong history in his season-opening tournament. He has won the event once, finished as runner-up six times, and recorded 15 top-five finishes.
“I woudl say the key to that is the opportunity to work on some things when you have a little bit of time off over the Christmas period, and then the enthusiasm to start a new year and start fresh,” mcilroy said after his round.
“I have always loved coming out here to the Middle East and to Dubai and playing in these tournaments, even as an amateur. I have been coming here for over 20 years and it’s a place I’m comfortable in.”
