Rory McIlroy has established a dominant position at the 90th edition of the Masters, holding a record-breaking six-stroke lead following the second round on April 10, 2026. The defending champion carded a 65 on Friday to reach 12-under-par 132, placing him in a commanding position as the tournament moves into the weekend.
McIlroy’s performance on April 10 included one of the most significant runs in the history of the tournament. Between the 12th and 18th holes, he recorded a sequence of birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie. This late charge included birdies on each of the final four holes of the day.
Despite occasional struggles with his driver, McIlroy’s shot-making and creativity allowed him to maintain control. He recorded two bogeys during the second round on the par-4 fifth and tenth holes, bringing his total to three bogeys over the first 36 holes of the competition. A critical moment occurred on the 17th hole, where he chipped in from off the green to save par.
Historical Milestones
The magnitude of McIlroy’s lead has created new benchmarks at Augusta National. His six-shot advantage is the largest lead ever recorded after 36 holes in Masters history. His 36-hole score of 12-under-par is three strokes better than any other defending champion in the history of the event.
McIlroy is now attempting to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 2002 to successfully defend his Masters title. If he secures the victory, he will become only the fourth player to achieve back-to-back wins, joining Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo.
This pursuit follows McIlroy’s achievement in 2025, when he completed the career Grand Slam by defeating Justin Rose in a playoff on the 18th hole.
The Field and Challengers
While McIlroy holds a significant lead, several challengers remain in contention heading into Saturday, April 11, 2026. Justin Rose, the runner-up from the 2025 tournament, finished his second round as the official clubhouse leader at five-under-par, having shot a 70 on April 9 and a 69 on April 10.
Shane Lowry has also emerged as a threat after playing bogey-free golf on Friday. Lowry shot a 69 to reach 139, moving him into the top five of the standings. Earlier in the tournament, Sam Burns had shared the co-lead with McIlroy at five-under-par following the opening round on April 9.
Patrick Reed is also noted as a familiar opponent chasing the leader as the tournament enters the final two rounds.
McIlroy indicated that he is playing with a sense of freedom after the pressure of completing the career Grand Slam in 2025. He has described his current state as playing with the house’s money
as he looks to secure his second green jacket.
