Townsend achieved this remarkable feat by going clear in a 200km breakaway and proving to be the only rider capable of holding off the charging peloton to the finish line.
The 207km race saw Townsend and two other escapees battling for the lead in the closing kilometers, holding a slim advantage over the pursuing pack. despite the efforts of several teams, including those with world-class sprinters, Townsend launched his sprint early on the finishing straight, demonstrating his renowned speed and securing a memorable victory.
The final moments were incredibly tense, as riders from the peloton nearly caught up to Townsend on the line. However, the Irish champion dug deep, holding on to cross the finish line first, a moment of disbelief and pure joy.
