Roscommon GAA stalwart Donie Smith has announced his retirement from inter-county football, bringing an end to a distinguished 14-season career that saw him become one of the county’s most recognizable and impactful forwards.
The Boyle native,who celebrated his 32nd birthday during his tenure,made his debut in the 2012 championship and went on to represent Roscommon with immense dedication,amassing a remarkable 133 appearances.
A Career Defined by Connacht Glory and Consistent Performance
Smith’s time in the primrose and blue was marked by significant silverware and a consistent display of high-level performance. He was a key figure in Roscommon’s connacht Championship triumphs in 2017 and 2019, etching his name into the county’s proud history.
beyond provincial success, smith also played a crucial role in Roscommon’s four Division 2 league titles, securing crowns in 2015, 2018, 2020, and 2022. He had the honour of captaining the side to their most recent Division 2 victory in 2022, a testament to his leadership qualities and influence on the pitch.

Roscommon GAA chairperson Brian Carroll paid a heartfelt tribute to Smith, expressing gratitude on behalf of the entire county.”On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years,” Carroll stated in a released statement. “He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride. Donie’s scoring tally of 8-273 shows the consistent level of high performance that Donie gave while on the pitch.”

Smith’s retirement comes after a season that saw Roscommon’s championship campaign conclude with a group stage defeat to Cork. This result lead to the subsequent stepping down of manager Davy Burke. Despite the championship disappointment, Roscommon secured promotion back to the top tier of the Allianz football League, reaching another Division 2 final, which ultimately ended in defeat to Monaghan.
