Rosie O’Donnell Reflects on Evolving Representation in ‘And Just Like That’

Updated may 30, 2025

Rosie O’Donnell, who appears in‌ the⁣ new season of “And Just Like That,” sees a ⁢significant shift in how the ⁤series approaches sexuality compared to ⁢its ‍predecessor, “Sex and the City.” O’Donnell ‌plays Mary,⁢ a nun who experiences ⁤a sexual awakening with Miranda, portrayed by Cynthia Nixon.

Critics have drawn parallels between Miranda’s guidance of Mary and her⁣ own journey of self-discovery with Che Diaz. O’Donnell notes‌ that her “And Just Like⁣ that” ⁣cameo,‍ exploring themes of sexuality and ‌identity, wouldn’t have fit within the‍ original⁤ “Sex and the⁣ City,” not only because Miranda was not⁣ yet ‌out.

O’Donnell told Variety that she never ‍considered being in “Sex and the City” as it was, “such a girl-, woman-focused show in a way⁤ that I don’t possess… I lack that gene.”

O’Donnell, who came out as a lesbian in 2002, described herself as an “O.G. lesbian.” She⁢ recounted explaining to her child that‌ she always felt like a girl ‍but‌ not a ⁢”real ⁤girl,” and was only ever interested in girls.

Working with Michael Patrick King‍ and Nixon felt natural, O’Donnell said. Her daughter ‍worked ⁤as ‌Nixon’s assistant during the last season. “She put her on there,⁤ and then she said, ‘By the way, Michael told me that he has a ⁤role for you. Are you up for it?’ I said,‍ ‘Are you kidding me? In a ⁢minute!’ I didn’t ⁣even⁣ have to think about it.”
