Updated May 30, 2025
Speaking at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas, Silk road founder Ross Ulbricht emphasized the importance of unity and decentralization within the crypto community to safeguard freedom. This marked Ulbricht’s first in-person public address since his release from prison in January, following a pardon by then-U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ulbricht illustrated his principles of freedom, decentralization, and unity with a story from his time attempting to cultivate hallucinogenic mushrooms to stock the Silk Road marketplace. He recounted dealing with wasp nests in a remote cabin, explaining how the wasps’ freedom and decentralized nature made them strong, yet their lack of unity made them vulnerable.
“Had a single wasp dared to come sting me when I reached for that first nest, I would have fled … but they didn’t. Thank god you are not wasps,” Ulbricht said.
Ulbricht, who served 12 years, credited the crypto community for advocating for his release. A video montage showcased his experiences outside prison, highlighting his newfound freedom.
“Winning your freedom feels as amazing as losing it feels awful,” Ulbricht said. “I’m free, and it’s because of you. You made this moment possible…Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Acknowledging the rapid technological advancements during his incarceration, Ulbricht likened himself to Rip van Winkle, expressing amazement at the new cryptocurrencies, blockchains, DeFi, Web3, and AI.
He concluded by stressing the importance of unity, drawing parallels to prison dynamics where division among inmates was favored by wardens. Ulbricht urged the audience to remain united in their pursuit of freedom and decentralization, emphasizing that these principles are key to securing their future in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
What’s next
