DETROIT – Aldrich potgieter and Kevin Roy both carded 10-under 62s Thursday to jointly seize the first-round lead at the Rocket Classic, breaking the tournament’s 18-hole record.Potgieter narrowly missed a birdie putt on the ninth green that would have given him the outright lead.
The Detroit Golf Club, a regular PGA Tour stop as 2019, has a reputation as one of the easier courses on the circuit. Potgieter, a 20-year-old South African, and Roy, 35, took full advantage of the conditions.
Potgieter started on the 10th hole and set a new tournament record with a 7-under 29 on the back nine. Both he and Roy recorded an eagle and eight birdies in bogey-free rounds.
Roy attributed his success to everything clicking. On the par-5 17th,he drove 300 yards,followed with a 288-yard second shot,and then chipped in from 30 feet.
