Royal Mail Prioritizes Parcels, Leaving Letters Undelivered for Weeks

The United Kingdom’s Royal Mail is facing mounting criticism as reports emerge of widespread delays in letter deliveries, with postal workers claiming parcels are being prioritized over standard mail. The situation has led to missed medical appointments, delayed legal notices, and growing frustration among customers, according to both the public and staff within the organization.

More than a dozen Royal Mail employees from various delivery offices across the UK have spoken out, alleging that daily mail rounds are being missed and letters are accumulating in postal depots for weeks. One postman, speaking anonymously, explained the current operational pressures: “I understand Notice delivery offices that clear [all the post] day in and day out, but they are few and far between, and certainly mine isn’t one of them.”

The prioritization of parcels is reportedly driven by a shift in Royal Mail’s strategy to compete with more agile courier services like DPD and Amazon. Tracked parcels generate higher revenue, leading to instructions – reportedly from management – to focus on their timely delivery. As one postal worker stated, “The tracked recorded parcels are done every day, because they make a difference to the stats for the office, but anything that’s not tracked every day there’ll be mail that’s not going out.”

The impact on the public is significant. Juliet, from Crawley, shared her experience with delayed NHS appointment letters, stating that the late deliveries had “very real consequences.” Bernard, from Inkberrow, Worcestershire, reported that both first-class letters and appointment notices were taking “several days to arrive,” calling the situation “a complete and expensive mess.” Other individuals have reported missing school certificates and bank statements.

The problems extend beyond individual inconveniences. The delays are particularly concerning for the Kenyan diaspora in the UK, who rely on Royal Mail for essential legal and personal communications. According to a report from Streamline Feed, the service degradation poses a “unique and under-reported threat to cross-border connectivity.”

Royal Mail acknowledged the concerns, stating they “want to reassure customers that the vast majority of mail is delivered as planned and understand how frustrating it is when post does not arrive as expected.” However, data indicates a decline in performance. Between June 20 and September 28, only 73.4 percent of first-class mail was delivered the next working day, falling short of the 93 percent target. Second-class mail fared slightly better at 90.4 percent within three working days, but also missed its 98.5 percent target.

The company has been fined £21 million by regulator Ofcom for failing to meet its delivery targets in 2024-25. Royal Mail is now preparing to overhaul its delivery services, including scrapping Saturday second-class deliveries and switching to an every-other-weekday schedule. Pilots of the new delivery model are underway, with a wider rollout planned for early next year.

Jamie Stephenson, Royal Mail’s chief operating officer, stated the company is “taking targeted action to improve performance – recruiting more frontline staff, simplifying operations and investing in a new delivery model, with early pilots already showing measurable results.” The company is currently hiring approximately 20,000 additional workers to manage the increased volume during the festive season.

Despite these efforts, the union representing postal workers describes Royal Mail as “a company in crisis.” As of February 16, 2026, the situation remains unresolved, leaving many customers and employees questioning the future of the 500-year-old institution.

Service updates from Royal Mail indicate that delivery and collection services are currently taking place across the UK, but specific postcode alerts have been issued warning of ongoing delays.
