Royals Offseason Spending: A Strong Start to Holiday Moves

Royals Offseason Spending: A Strong Start to Holiday Moves

November 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

Thanksgiving has passed, but the Kansas City Royals are already active in the offseason. They ranked as the second-biggest spenders last year and are again among the top third in Major League Baseball (MLB) spending this offseason. They secured superstar Bobby Witt Jr. and are currently third in offseason spending, showing intent to continue their shopping spree.

The Royals made a significant trade by sending Brady Singer to Cincinnati for Jonathan India and Joey Wiemer. They also signed pitcher Michael Wacha to a three-year deal, which adds to their spending efforts. The Los Angeles Dodgers are also spending heavily, while the Los Angeles Angels, who traded Griffin Canning to Atlanta for Jorge Soler, have outspent the Royals.

General Manager J.J. Picollo has stated the team will look to retain Wacha and add at least two bats, one outfielder, and some pitching depth. So far, they have signed Wacha and acquired one batter, indicating they still need to make two or three more moves.

The Royals’ spending strategy appears to be smart. Four notable pitchers signed extensions or deals this offseason, including Wacha, Gerrit Cole, Yusei Kikuchi, and Blake Snell. While other pitchers may project better than Wacha, he is signed at a lower rate. For small-market teams like the Royals, effective spending is critical.

Reports also suggest the Royals inquired about Juan Soto, highlighting their willingness to invest in talent. Although Soto may be out of reach, targets like Alex Bregman seem more plausible. The Royals’ approach shows a commitment to winning, even within a limited budget.

The Royals are demonstrating a new mindset, focusing on competition rather than just profits. They have committed to long-term contracts, which indicates their intent to build a winning team rather than simply seeking financial gains. This offseason spending reflects the team’s desire to build on last year’s playoff experience.

Small-market teams can succeed by making strategic efforts. The Royals have drafted well, acquiring talent like Witt and trading for Cole Ragans. Now, they are filling in key positions around their stars to enhance their competitiveness.

This is an exciting time for Royals fans, marking a shift in the team’s direction. There is a sense of hope as the team shows a clear willingness to invest in success.
