RTÉ to Give Staff €1,000 Tax-Free Vouchers
RTÉ to Issue $1,000 Vouchers to Employees Amid Ongoing Pay Dispute
Dublin, Ireland – Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, will be issuing $1,000 vouchers to nearly 1,900 employees in early 2024 as part of an interim agreement with the RTÉ Trade Union Group (TUG). This move comes amidst ongoing negotiations regarding a pay claim lodged by the union last year.
The vouchers, which will be non-taxable, are intended to provide some financial relief to employees while discussions on a new collective pay agreement continue.”In light of this, an interim arrangement has been agreed by RTÉ and the TUG which will see a non-taxable voucher of up to $1,000 being provided to RTÉ employees who are in employment with RTÉ on December 31, 2024, on the same basis as previously,” an RTÉ spokesperson said.
This interim arrangement will remain in effect until April 30, 2025, at which point a new collective pay agreement is expected to be finalized.
The TUG’s original pay claim,submitted in October 2022,sought a flat-rate increase of $1,500 and a 6% rise.
RTÉ estimates the total cost of the voucher program to be around $1.75 million.
The broadcaster and the TUG have committed to continuing discussions on the pay claim in the new year.
RTÉ to Issue Gift Cards to Employees,Sparking Questions About Spending
Dublin,Ireland - Ireland’s national public service broadcaster,RTÉ,is set to distribute gift cards to its employees, raising eyebrows about the use of public funds.A recent tender document revealed RTÉ’s plan to award a contract for the provision of “prepaid gift cards” to an estimated 1,500 employees. The cards, valued at €100, €200, or €600, will be issued annually, though the exact amount each employee receives will vary.
The tender specifies that the cards must be physical and redeemable both online and in a wide range of stores, allowing employees to choose how they spend the funds. RTÉ emphasized the need for the cards to be versatile, stating, “It is crucial that the vouchers can be used across a wide range of sectors to accommodate the diverse nature of the recipients.”
The decision to issue gift cards has sparked debate, with some questioning the necessity of such spending amidst ongoing financial pressures faced by the broadcaster.
RTÉ is expected to award the contract for the gift cards on January 31st.
RTÉ Voucher Plan: A Band-Aid Solution or Misuse of Funds?
as RTÉ prepares to issue $1,000 vouchers to nearly 1,900 employees amidst an ongoing pay dispute with the RTÉ trade Union Group (TUG), questions are being raised about the wisdom of this interim solution.
On the one hand, the vouchers offer immediate financial relief to employees while negotiations for a new collective pay agreement continue. RTÉ spokesperson emphasized the intended purpose, stating, “In light of this, an interim arrangement has been agreed by RTÉ and the TUG which will see a non-taxable voucher of up to $1,000 being provided to RTÉ employees who are in employment with RTÉ on December 31, 2024, on the same basis as previously.”
However, the decision to issue vouchers instead of addressing the core issue of the pay claim has drawn criticism. The TUG’s original claim, submitted in October 2022, sought a flat-rate increase of $1,500 and a 6% rise. While the vouchers offer some respite, they fall short of the desired salary adjustments.
Adding to the debate is a recently revealed tender document outlining RTÉ’s plan to award contracts for “prepaid gift cards” to approximately 1,500 employees. These cards, valued at €100, €200, or €600, will be issued annually.
This additional spending, coupled with the voucher program, raises concerns about responsible use of public funds, particularly as RTÉ faces financial constraints. Critics argue that these funds could be better utilized improving employee wages and benefits, addressing the root cause of the ongoing dispute.
While the vouchers offer temporary relief, they raise serious questions about RTÉ’s financial priorities and its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by its employees. the effectiveness of this ”band-aid” solution remains to be seen, and ultimately,a long-term,sustainable solution is vital to ensure a harmonious working environment and the continued success of Ireland’s national broadcaster.
