Hannah and Bastian are facing the difficult reality of raising a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD),a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness. A significant challenge for the family is finding a suitable home – one with at least two bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor – to accommodate their child’s evolving needs.This search has proven particularly difficult, adding to the emotional burden of the situation.
“The search for a home where at least two bedrooms and a bathroom are on the ground floor… That appears to be a difficult task for the family. Simultaneously occurring I know from experience how much more care is involved. That makes it bitter,” Hannah shared.
Living Day by Day
Despite the hardships, hannah and Bastian are committed to maintaining a positive outlook, focusing on the present moment. Their faith provides a crucial source of strength.”Our motto is: live on the day,” Hannah explained. She currently works as a nursing teacher, which she finds provides a helpful outlet.
“At home we are there for each other. We talk about it and wear it together,” Hannah saeid, emphasizing the importance of open interaction and mutual support within their marriage. She also highlighted the need to avoid falling into a caregiver/caregiver dynamic, rather prioritizing their relationship as partners.
Maintaining a healthy marital balance is crucial, Hannah noted: “You have to ensure that you do not become colleagues in the care of your children, but partners remain. That is not always easy, but very critically important.”
Raising Awareness for Research
hannah is actively sharing her family’s story to raise awareness and support for research into muscular dystrophy. This effort is directly linked to the fundraising initiatives of Team Kamp Kardol, a group of dedicated mountain bikers from Nunspeet, Netherlands, preparing for the Duchenne Heroes event.
Team Kamp Kardol is led by Albert Kamp,Hannah’s brother,and is deeply connected to Hannah and her family. The team will embark on a seven-day cycling journey, covering 70 to 100 kilometers each day through diverse terrain – forests, farmland roads, single tracks, and challenging paths – to raise funds for vital research.
