Ruben Gallego Wins Arizona Senate Seat, Defeating Kari Lake

November 12, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

Ruben Gallego Wins Arizona US Senate Race

Ruben Gallego, a Democrat, has been elected as Arizona’s first Latino U.S. senator, defeating Republican candidate Kari Lake. This victory prevents Republicans from further increasing their majority in the Senate. Gallego will replace Kyrsten Sinema, who left the Democratic Party after her 2018 election and did not seek re-election.

Gallego, a five-term House member and Iraq War veteran, won the race despite Kari Lake’s efforts to portray him as a supporter of "open borders." Gallego’s campaign focused on his life story, including being raised by a single mother and his service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, where he fought in Iraq.

The election results show that Gallego maintained a significant fundraising advantage throughout the campaign. He also repeatedly criticized Lake’s stance on abortion, highlighting the state law dating back to the Civil War that severely restricts abortion access. Gallego promised to work towards fixing the nation’s broken immigration system, support women’s reproductive rights, and advocate for veterans.

Gallego’s win reflects a broader trend of Democratic successes in Arizona, which was once reliably Republican but has since shifted in favor of Democrats since Donald Trump’s 2016 election. The outcome has been particularly significant as Arizona voters have consistently rejected Trump-endorsed candidates in elections following his presidency[1][2].

Gallego’s victory was marked by enthusiastic supporters who cheered him on, prominently mentioning his single mother who raised him. In his first remarks after the race was called, Gallego thanked supporters and promised to fight for all Arizonans, regardless of how they voted. He said, "I will fight for Arizona in Washington," emphasizing his commitment to representing the state’s diverse population[1].
