– U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s decision to skip a key meeting focused on Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference has sparked concern among European officials, amid existing tensions in the trans-Atlantic relationship.
Rubio was scheduled to participate in the Berlin Format meeting, which included leaders from a dozen European countries – Germany, Poland, and Finland among them – as well as representatives from the European Commission, and NATO. However, he cancelled his attendance, reportedly citing scheduling conflicts, according to the Financial Times.
“The secretary won’t be attending the Berlin Format meeting on Ukraine given the number of meetings he has happening at the same time,” a U.S. Official stated. “He’s engaging on Russia-Ukraine in many of his meetings here in Munich.”
The last-minute cancellation drew criticism from some European officials. One described the move as “insane” to the Financial Times, while another expressed concern that the meeting lacked substance without U.S. Participation.
