Rudy Giuliani Ordered to Appear in Court Over Asset Dispute
Giuliani Ordered to Appear in Court Over Election Interference Claims
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been ordered by a federal judge to appear in court in early January to face questioning about his role in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell issued the order on Tuesday, demanding Giuliani’s presence for a deposition in a lawsuit filed by Democratic lawmakers. The lawsuit alleges that Giuliani and other allies of former President Donald Trump engaged in a conspiracy to spread false details about election fraud and interfere with the peaceful transfer of power.”Mr. Giuliani’s testimony is crucial to understanding the full scope of the alleged conspiracy,” Judge Howell wrote in her order. “His firsthand knowledge of events leading up to the January 6th insurrection is essential to this case.”
Giuliani, who served as Trump’s personal attorney during the 2020 election, has repeatedly made unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud. He spearheaded legal challenges in several states, ultimately failing to overturn the election results.
The lawsuit, filed by Representatives Ted Lieu and Kathleen Rice, seeks to hold Giuliani and other defendants accountable for their actions. They argue that the defendants’ efforts to undermine public trust in the election process caused notable harm to American democracy.
Giuliani’s legal team has argued that he is protected by attorney-client privilege and shoudl not be compelled to testify. however, judge Howell rejected this argument, stating that the privilege does not apply in cases involving alleged criminal activity.
The deposition is scheduled for January 5th,2024. It remains to be seen whether Giuliani will comply with the court order.
