As a player from the Korea University rugby team died during a training camp in Japan, it appears that there will be no rugby matches this year at the Korea University rugby league (Korea University rugby league in odd years).
According to Korea University and Yonsei University on the 29th, Korea University sent an official letter to Yonsei University the day before requesting the cancellation of the ‘2024 Regular Yonsei Game’ rugby match.
It appears that the team decided that it would be difficult to proceed with the game as scheduled after a player from Korea University died during a recent training camp.
If Yonsei University accepts this fairy, the Yonsei-Korea rugby match scheduled for the 28th of next month at Goyang Stadium will be canceled.
In this case, this year’s athletics competition will only feature four events: baseball, basketball, and ice skating on the first day, and soccer on the second day.
It will be the first time in 25 years that a rugby match has not been played in a regular season. In 1999, the match was cancelled due to heavy rain.
In 2019, rugby and soccer matches were not held due to the aftermath of the typhoon. In 1975 and 1996, all matches were canceled due to the Korea University soccer team bus accident and the Yonsei University Korean University Student Council incident, respectively.
Kim, a rugby player who was attending the Department of Physical Education at Korea University’s College of Education, died on the 20th during training in Japan.
On the 19th, while training in Ryugasaki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, Kim collapsed with symptoms of exhaustion and was transferred to a nearby hospital, but died the next day.
Korea University is investigating the matter, including whether the coach and coaching staff responded appropriately after Kim collapsed.
