Rugby Player Leslie Topia Barrowcliffe Loses Name Suppression After Sex Video Conviction
Rugby Player Convicted for Covertly Filming Sex Video
Leslie Topia Barrowcliffe, a promising rugby player from Taranaki, faced legal action after he and a friend filmed a sexual encounter without the woman’s consent. The incident involved a threesome in a shower and led to the video being shared on social media.
Barrowcliffe, selected for the Chiefs under-20s squad, had a history of success in rugby, including captaincy of the Taranaki under-19 team. However, his future in the sport is now uncertain following a court ruling that upheld his conviction. He sought to suppress his name and argued that the conviction would harm his rugby career.
Justice David Boldt dismissed Barrowcliffe’s appeal. He emphasized that Barrowcliffe’s actions reflected a troubling culture among young men and that concealing the conviction would not serve justice. Following this decision, Barrowcliffe was removed from the Taranaki Rugby Football Union (TRFU) Academy.
The woman involved expressed feelings of violation and embarrassment after learning about the video. She chose to leave the country due to the incident’s impact. Barrowcliffe was sentenced to 12 months of supervision and required to pay $1,500 in reparation.
His friend, Trent Pickering, received an eight-month home detention sentence for his role in the incident. The court noted both men’s actions as reprehensible, highlighting the lack of accountability within their rugby community.
Barrowcliffe acknowledged the serious consequences of his actions and expressed regret for the harm caused. Both rugby clubs condemned the behavior, stating they do not tolerate such actions.
Despite Barrowcliffe’s previous achievements, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the implications of irresponsible behavior and the need for respect in all interactions.
