Run to Save Lives: Mexico’s Race to Find Bone Marrow Donors

Run to Save Lives: Mexico’s Race to Find Bone Marrow Donors

February 25, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor Business

While thousands train to beat personal bests or log more kilometers, a unique race is underway in Mexico with a far more significant goal: finding donors who can save the lives of patients battling leukemia and other blood diseases.

This isn’t just another marathon. It’s a cause-driven race organized by NMDP México, the foundation that connects patients in need of a stem cell transplant with compatible altruistic donors worldwide.

And this year, its first major sporting event lands in Puebla with an ambitious target: 1,000 runners and up to 300 new donors registered.

Because here, you don’t just run. You literally give life to someone else.

A Race Born From a Silent Urgency

Mexico faces a little-known but critical problem: around 2,000 stem cell transplants are needed each year, but only 10% of the demand is met.

The rest of the patients—many of them children with leukemia—simply wait. And sometimes, they don’t make it.

Sergio, hoster and director of NMDP México, explains bluntly: “If we don’t have Mexican donors registered, we depend on foreign sources. And cells travel fresh, lasting only 48 hours. That increases the cost and complicates saving lives.”

The more local donors available, the faster, cheaper, and more feasible the transplant becomes.

This is the genesis of the race: if people are already active for their health, why not turn sport into a bridge for donating life?

How Does the Race Work?

The event is entirely recreational and family-friendly:

  • Distances: 3, 5, and 10 km
  • Modality: running or walking
  • Pets allowed
  • Inclusive
  • Location: Ecological Park of Puebla
  • Accessible cost: 350 pesos
  • Date: coinciding with Family Day

But the most important part happens off the clock.

During the event:

  • Potential donors are registered
  • Funds are raised for transplants
  • Information about donation is disseminated

There will be a real encounter between a patient and their donor after a year and a half of not knowing each other. The organization says this moment often ends in tears.

The Great Myth: “They’re Going to Operate on My Spine”

One of the biggest obstacles isn’t medical; it’s fear. Many believe that donating bone marrow involves risky surgeries or paralysis. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sergio clarifies:

  • It’s not the spinal cord
  • The spine isn’t touched
  • There’s no paralysis
  • Most of the time, it’s obtained through peripheral blood, similar to a platelet donation

Registration actually begins with something as simple as a cheek swab. Yet, misinformation holds back thousands. That’s why this race is also an educational campaign.

Who Can Register?

The requirements are simple:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old
  • Be in good general health
  • Have no transmissible cellular diseases

After that, your genetic information enters a global registry of more than 42 million donors.

You might find a match in months, years… or never. But if it happens, you could be someone’s only hope. Literally.

Where Can I Register?

Registration can be done online on the official race page or in person on February 28 at the Acuario Michin.

It’s worth noting that the runner’s kit includes the official event t-shirt, backpack, and medal, as well as access to other recreational activities.

Why Puebla?

The choice wasn’t accidental. Puebla has a key asset: genetic diversity. This mix increases the chances of compatibility with Mexican patients.

More diversity = more lives saved.

The Goal: 2 Million Pesos and 1,000 Runners

The financial objective is to raise funds to cover:

  • Donor searches
  • Cell transportation
  • Medical procedures
  • Support for transplant centers

And at the same time, add hundreds of new registrations.

A chain of help that begins with a pair of running shoes.
