Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Set to Launch on Switch and PC This May

Fans of the beloved Rune Factory series have a new adventure to look forward to this spring. Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, the latest installment in the action RPG and life-simulation franchise, is set to launch on May 30 for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Developed by Marvelous, the game promises to deliver a fresh yet familiar experience, blending traditional gameplay with a bold new setting inspired by Japanese culture.

The game introduces players to Azuma, a previously unseen eastern land devastated by the Celestial Collapse—a catastrophic event caused by a massive object crashing into the region. The aftermath left the land fractured, its runes depleted, and its gods vanished. As one of two protagonists, players will awaken with the power of an Earth Dancer, tasked with restoring hope and vitality to the broken world.

Players can choose between Subaru, voiced by Junya Enoki, or Kaguya, voiced by Yuishikawa, as they embark on a journey to rebuild villages, cultivate alliances, and combat the Blight—a mysterious corruption spreading across Azuma. Alongside their fluffy companion Mocoron, voiced by Ai Kakuma, players will wield sacred treasures, master new weapons like the Bow and Talisman, and harness the power of dance to purify the land.

One of the standout features of Guardians of Azuma is its emphasis on village-building. Beyond tending to farms, players will reconstruct entire settlements, attracting new residents and reviving the gods to restore resources and vitality. The game also introduces 12 romanceable characters, each with fully voiced storylines, including the enigmatic archaeologist Hina, the adventurous skyfarer Mauro, and the lively teashop owner Iroha.

The game’s Japanese-inspired aesthetic shines through its seasonal-themed villages, traditional festivals, and beautifully designed characters. Players can explore diverse landscapes, from lush forests to crumbling mountains, while engaging in classic Rune Factory activities like farming, crafting, and battling monsters.

A recent 16-page feature in Weekly Famitsu offered a deeper look into the game’s story, characters, and gameplay mechanics. The issue, released on January 16, included an exclusive interview with game director Shiro Maekawa, providing insights into the development process and the team’s vision for this ambitious new chapter in the series.

With its blend of action-packed combat, life-simulation elements, and heartfelt storytelling, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma aims to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be one of the most immersive entries in the franchise yet.
