Donald Trump is intensifying his attacks on Rupert Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal, filing a lawsuit after the newspaper reported on a letter Trump received from Jeffrey Epstein’s associates. This legal challenge marks a important escalation in Trump’s ongoing war with segments of the media, following recent settlements with Paramount Global adn Disney. The conflict highlights a complex dynamic where Murdoch appears to be simultaneously courting and clashing with the former president.

A Shifting Relationship: Murdoch’s Balancing act

The lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal comes amidst a perceived strategic maneuver by murdoch, according to media observers. While Fox News, also under Murdoch’s umbrella, often offers sympathetic coverage to Trump, the Wall street Journal has maintained a more critical editorial stance.

“Murdoch is putting one part of the organization in attack mode while keeping the other [Fox News] in reserve while it benefits from the base of the person that he’s attacking,” said former Fox News executive Preston Dodd. This strategy allows Murdoch to appeal to Trump’s supporters through Fox News while perhaps maintaining credibility with a broader audience through the Journal’s reporting.

Murdoch’s proximity to Trump is well-documented. He attended trump’s second inauguration and participated in an Oval Office meeting with business leaders shortly after. More recently, he was reportedly seen among Trump’s VIP circle at the FIFA Club World Cup soccer championship in New Jersey on July 13th.

The Epstein Letter and the Spark for Litigation

The immediate catalyst for the lawsuit was a Wall Street Journal report concerning a letter Trump received related to Jeffrey Epstein. According to Trump’s lawsuit, a Journal reporter emailed White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, informing her of the impending story.Trump’s legal team disputed the allegations, prompting a direct phone call from Trump to Murdoch.Trump alleges that Murdoch promised to “take care of it,” a claim the former president asserts was unfulfilled. The story published on July 17th, leading Trump to file suit the following day. Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, responded with a firm statement: “we have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit.”

A Pattern of Settlements and Legal Victories for Trump

This dispute is the latest in a series of recent legal battles Trump has waged against media organizations, often resulting in favorable outcomes for the former president.

Paramount Global: Last month, Paramount Global agreed to a $16 million settlement with Trump over edits made to a “60 Minutes” interview with Kamala Harris. First Amendment experts widely criticized the settlement, arguing the lawsuit lacked merit. Walt Disney Co./ABC News: In December, Disney paid $16 million to resolve a defamation lawsuit brought by Trump over statements made by ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos. Again, legal scholars questioned the outcome, suggesting Disney likely would have ultimately prevailed in court.

Trump has publicly celebrated these victories, proclaiming his success in holding media outlets accountable. He recently stated his intention to “sue and hold accountable the once great Wall Street Journal,” labeling it a “Revolting and filthy Rag.”

Will Murdoch Stand His Ground?

Despite the escalating conflict, some observers believe Murdoch will not back down.

“In this bizarre world that we live in, Rupert is actually one of the few people who might be willing to stand up to Trump,” said media analyst Matthew Kahn. “Remember, Rupert loves newspapers, he loves the scoop and he loves to stir the pot.”

the outcome of this legal battle, and the future of the relationship between Trump and Murdoch, remains to be seen. Though, it’s clear that the former president is prepared to aggressively challenge any media coverage he deems unfavorable, and Murdoch appears willing to defend his publications’ journalistic integrity – even if it means a direct confrontation with a powerful political figure.
