JAKARTA – The Indonesian rupiah closed stronger against the U.S. dollar Friday afternoon, buoyed by growing concerns about a potential recession in the United States.
The rupiah gained 27.5 points, or 0.16%, to close at Rp 16,795.5 per dollar. Meanwhile, the dollar index fell 1.23% to 99.6.
Analyst: Trade Tensions Weigh on Dollar
Currency analyst Ibrahim Asssuaibi attributed the dollar’s weakness to escalating worries about a U.S. recession, exacerbated by trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. He noted that the previous day, tariffs imposed by then President Donald Trump on China had risen to 145%, an unprecedented level, while China’s tariffs on U.S. goods also took effect at 84%.
According to Asssuaibi, traders are increasingly concerned about the impact of these tariffs, notably given the U.S.’s continued reliance on certain difficult-to-replace materials from China. “Even though Trump postponed a reciprocal trade tariff plan for other countries for 90 days,a trade war with china still poses a meaningful threat to American importers and exporters,” Asssuaibi said.
Inflation Data Adds Pressure
Asssuaibi added that the dollar was further weakened by lower-than-expected consumer inflation data for March, fueling speculation that the Federal Reserve might accelerate interest rate cuts amid growing economic pressures from the trade war.
“However, the central bank has adopted a cautious stance regarding Trump’s policies. Declining U.S. Treasury prices, reflecting doubts about the U.S. economy under trump, are also contributing to the pressure on the dollar,” Ibrahim explained.
China’s Currency Strategy
Moreover, China is widely anticipated to allow its currency to weaken further in the coming weeks. A weaker yuan would make Chinese exports more competitive, potentially offsetting some of the negative impacts of the trade war with the U.S.
