Russell Accuses Verstappen of Bullying and Threats
Russell Accuses Verstappen of Bullying and Threats after Qatar GP Incident
Mercedes driver George Russell has accused two-time formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen of bullying and making threats following a controversial incident during qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Russell responded to criticism leveled at him by the Red Bull driver after their on-track clash. “I’ve known Max for 12 years and have always respected him, but that respect is gone now,” Russell stated. “Even when we battled on track, it was never personal. But Max made it personal this time. Someone needs to stand up to his bullying.Until now, people would have forgiven him for almost anything.”
The controversy stems from qualifying in Losail, where Verstappen initially secured pole position by a mere 0.055 seconds ahead of Russell. Though, Verstappen was subsequently penalized for impeding Russell during the session, costing him the pole position. Russell went on to claim pole, though Verstappen ultimately won the race.
Verstappen, though, remained critical of Russell in the aftermath, using strong language in interviews leading up to the season finale in Abu Dhabi. “I stand by my words,” Verstappen insisted. “I’ve never experienced someone actively trying to get another driver penalized and then lying about it.”
Russell, in turn, alleged that Verstappen threatened to intentionally crash into him following the incident in Qatar.”That’s unacceptable, it’s crossing the line,” Russell declared. “I won’t just stand by and watch. Someone needs to stand up to him before things get out of control.”
Russell also criticized Verstappen’s behavior towards other drivers, citing an example from the Mexican Grand Prix where verstappen received two penalties for aggressive driving against McLaren’s Lando Norris. “When things don’t go his way,he becomes overly angry and almost violent,” Russell claimed.
verstappen’s Tactics Considered Bullying by Russell
Following the controversy surrounding the Qatar Grand Prix qualifying session, Mercedes driver George Russell has made strong accusations against reigning Formula 1 Champion Max Verstappen, branding his behavior ‘bullying’ and claiming to have received threats from the Red Bull driver.
The incident in question saw Verstappen initially claim pole position, only to be penalized for impeding Russell during the session. This handed Russell pole position, which he ultimately converted into second place, while Verstappen went on to win the race.
The tension between the two drivers escalated in the aftermath, with Verstappen criticizing Russell’s conduct and accusing him of deliberately seeking a penalty. Russell vehemently denied these claims and went further, revealing what he perceives as a pattern of unacceptable behaviour from Verstappen.
“I’ve known Max for 12 years and have always respected him,but that respect is gone now,” Russell stated in an interview with Sky Sports. “even when we battled on track, it was never personal. But Max made it personal this time. Someone needs to stand up to his bullying. Until now, people would have forgiven him for almost anything.”
Russell further alleged that Verstappen threatened to intentionally crash into him following the qualifying incident in Qatar, stating, “That’s unacceptable, it’s crossing the line. I won’t just stand by and watch. Someone needs to stand up to him before things get out of control.”
Russell also cited Verstappen’s driving in the Mexican Grand Prix, where he received two penalties for aggressive maneuvers against Lando Norris, as evidence of a broader pattern of unacceptable behavior.
“When things don’t go his way, he becomes overly angry and almost violent,” Russell claimed.
Verstappen, for his part, maintained his stance, defending his actions and reiterating his accusations against Russell.
