During the ongoing criminal trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court, a complainant testified that Russell Brand raped her at his London home in 2009 and subsequently treated her like an animal,
ABC News reported. Brand, 51, is facing three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault spanning a decade from 1999 to 2009 involving six women in the United Kingdom. The actor and comedian denies all charges, telling police after his arrest that he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.
Testimony Regarding the 2009 Incident at Brand’s London Home
Under cross-examination by defence barrister Ian Winter KC, the woman acknowledged she was a huge fan who was obsessed with him and went to his home willingly. However, she maintained throughout questioning that she never consented to what followed. After the alleged assault, she said that when she came out, he asked her to brush her teeth. A real estate agency photograph of Brand’s bedroom taken in 2009 was tendered as evidence in court. The jury also saw video of her second police interview discussing text messages exchanged after Brand spotted her at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a few months later. Unable to remember Brand’s first message, she had replied asking why he was messaging her, and he wrote back that he wanted to push her further because she was dirty. She told him he pushed her far enough and treated her like an animal, and he immediately responded that he was sorry. When Winter put it to her that she did not reply that he had raped her, she confirmed she had not, while maintaining her stance on lack of consent despite the defence’s assertions.
Earlier Allegations Presented at Southwark Crown Court
Additional complainants have detailed allegations from earlier years of the indicted decade. The BBC reported that a third complainant testified about a 2004 incident at a Soho birthday party in London, stating that Brand grabbed her breasts in the middle of a conversation with a weird, maniacal grin
before dragging her into a bar toilet and orally raping her. That witness told police she closed her eyes and tried not to be there during the assault, adding that she did not report it at the time due to the prevailing lad culture
of the 2000s and feelings of shame. She recalled his big weird grin resembling a clown’s face as he launched forward, stating that it happened so fast and left her in shock and disbelief. He held her quite strongly on the arm and pulled her toward the toilets behind where he stood, with part of her telling her just to get it over with so she could get out of there, and she definitely said she did not want to do it. After the alleged rape, she said Brand turned to her and suggested they swap numbers as if it were all normal. SMH.com.au noted that a second complainant previously alleged Brand tried to pull her into male toilets at MTV Europe in 2001, while the first complainant alleged a 1999 rape following a fringe event at the Labour Party conference.
Trial Schedule and Defence Position
Defence counsel Ian Winter KC challenged the accounts during cross-examinations, arguing that encounters were either physically impossible, consensual, or misremembered by accusers who may have reimagined events following later media reports and a 2003 documentary. The trial before Southwark Crown Court is expected to last approximately six weeks, with proceedings continuing as additional testimony from the remaining complainants is heard by the jury.
