Russell Progress P4 Hungary Qualifying Antonelli Reflects
Mercedes Faces Uncertainty as Track Temperatures Fluctuate Ahead of Sunday’s Race

mercedes driver George Russell believes the team has made significant progress, stating, “P4, compared to yesterday and this morning, is clearly a big step forward.” however, the Briton admits to a degree of uncertainty regarding the team’s true potential for Sunday’s race, particularly due to volatile track temperatures.
“Confused is maybe not the right word,” Russell explained when asked about his outlook. “It’s just like you have no idea. The track by the end of Q3 was 37 degrees, but 20 minutes before Qualifying it was 55 degrees. That’s going to play a huge role in our performance.”
Despite the unpredictable conditions, Russell remains hopeful about his prospects. “I hope I can fight with Charles at least, but the Astons look surprisingly strong too,” he commented, acknowledging the competitive landscape.
Antonelli’s Qualifying Woes
Simultaneously occurring, Russell’s teammate, Kimi Antonelli, endured a frustrating qualifying session. The Italian rookie narrowly missed out on Q3, ultimately qualifying 11th. His session went from bad to worse when his fastest lap time was deleted for exceeding track limits, dropping him to 15th on the grid.
“I don’t know, the last lap I had no rear-end – the grip was wholly gone,” Antonelli said, reflecting on his early exit. “Already from Turn 1 I had a massive slide and than it just went worse and worse during the lap.”
The young driver expressed his disappointment, stating, “I don’t really know what to say. Obviously it’s quite annoying because the confidence was good. Once again, things didn’t go our way.”
Looking ahead to the race, antonelli felt the car had shown promise. “definitely the car was better and it gave me the confidence, which was nice. that’s why today is very annoying, as definitely the pace was there, and it’s just a shame that we weren’t able to show it.”
The fluctuating track temperatures are expected to be a key factor for all teams as they strategize for Sunday’s Grand Prix, with Mercedes aiming to capitalize on any opportunities that arise from the unpredictable conditions.
