Montreal – George Russell expressed surprise at Max Verstappen‘s recent apology for their on-track collision during the Barcelona race. The incident, which involved Verstappen driving into Russell’s car, has placed the reigning champion on the verge of a one-race suspension.
Initially, Verstappen appeared unapologetic, even suggesting Russell needed “tissues” for complaining. Though, he later posted on social media, admitting the incident “wasn’t right” and “shouldn’t have happened.” Russell, who previously labeled Verstappen a ”bully,” found this change of heart unexpected.
Speaking at the Canadian Grand Prix media day on Thursday, Russell noted the apology was “quite unlike him.” He added that despite encountering Verstappen at the airport with his family, they did not discuss the Barcelona incident. Verstappen was occupied with his newborn and navigating security with a stroller.
Russell downplayed any lingering issues. He stated that Verstappen’s actions ultimately benefited him, while costing Verstappen. “Ultimately, his actions benefitted me, cost him, and I should say thanks,” Russell said.
Verstappen addressed his social media post, explaining it was simply his outlook on the race. “It was a misjudgment, you know, clearly in the corner,” Verstappen said. “Everyone makes mistakes in life.everyone learns from them and we just move on.” He also affirmed he would continue racing as usual, despite the looming threat of a race ban for any further infractions.
What’s next
Verstappen faces heightened scrutiny in the upcoming races, with even a minor error potentially leading to a notable penalty. The Formula 1 world will be watching to see if he can maintain his aggressive driving style while avoiding further incidents.
