Veteran Point Guard Lands in Sacramento
Former National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Russell Westbrook has signed with the Sacramento Kings, beginning his 18th professional season. The move comes after becoming a free agent in June following the Denver Nuggets’ elimination in the Western Conference semi-finals.
Westbrook, age 36, averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 75 games for the Nuggets during the 2023-24 season. He’s now set to play for his seventh NBA franchise since being originally drafted in 2008 by the Seattle SuperSonics.
A Decorated NBA Career
Throughout his illustrious career, Westbrook has played for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers in addition to his time with the Nuggets and SuperSonics. He holds the NBA record for most career triple-doubles with 203, a testament to his all-around impact on the game. Westbrook also led the league in scoring in both 2015 and 2017, demonstrating his offensive prowess.
Kings Expect Leadership and Impact
Sacramento Kings General Manager Scott Perry expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating that Westbrook “embodies the identity we’re striving for in Sacramento.” The Kings are anticipating that Westbrook will significantly bolster their point guard position and provide crucial leadership both on and off the court. Perry emphasized Westbrook’s commitment to competition and winning.
The addition of a player with Westbrook’s experience and track record is expected to elevate the Kings’ competitive level as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
