Reuters reported today (31st) that the Finnish Coast Guard has reported that satellite navigation signals in the Baltic Sea have been continuously interfered with since April this year, and noted that there have been several recent incidents of oil tankers falsely reporting their position data in sequence. To hide their past.
Finnish Interior Minister Lulu Raane said last week that Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Global Satellite Positioning System (GPS) signals have recently been tampered with in Finland and the Baltic Sea region, and that Finland suspects Russia is behind it.
The Finnish Coast Guard noted that incidents of interference with the global satellite navigation system in the Gulf of Finland have increased since April, causing ships to lose their way and almost get lost at sea.
Interference causes errors in the ship’s automatic identification system (AIS), which aids in electronic navigation.
Finnish Coast Guard Commander Pekka Nittilao said: “In recent weeks, we have noticed that (AIS) equipment has been deliberately turned off, with position information in the online positioning system being tampered with to show the wrong ship’s position.”
Russia has previously denied any interference with communications and satellite networks.
Nitila added that various tankers visiting Russian ports near St. Petersburg changed their location data about 10 times, which is believed to be related to sanctions evasion.
“For example, if a country buying Russian oil wants to disguise the fact that the oil was purchased from Russia, the seller or ship could use deception to pretend the ship did not visit Russia.”
The Finnish Coast Guard suspects that Russia is jamming signals to protect its oil ports in the eastern Gulf of Finland from possible Ukrainian aircraft or drone attacks.
