Russian Bombings in Ukraine Kill One, Wound 23, Amid Escalating Conflict

Russian bombings in two Ukrainian regions killed one person and wounded 23, officials said Monday, while Moscow reported that at least 31 civilians had been killed and 256 wounded in attacks in Russia’s Kursk region as of Sept. 5.

Ukrainian Casualties

The governors of two Ukrainian regions and police said one person was killed and seven wounded in the Kherson region on Sunday, and 16 others were wounded in overnight strikes targeting the city of Zaporizhia.

In Kherson, Russian bombing and airstrikes targeted residential buildings, killing an elderly woman and wounding seven people on Sunday, according to the region’s governor, Oleksandr Prokudin.

In Zaporizhia, 16 people were injured after Russia carried out seven airstrikes overnight in the city and surrounding areas, Ukrainian National Police said.

Escalating Conflict

The attack coincided with a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States to present his plan to end the two-and-a-half-year war with Russia.

Zaporizhia Governor Ivan Fedorov wrote on the Telegram platform that four of the injured had been taken to hospital. The governor and police also released photos of residential buildings with broken balconies, and 13 highly-damaged cars. Apart from educational institutions and private houses, raised buildings were also damaged.

Kursk Casualties

The Ukrainian Air Force announced that its defense forces shot down three Shahed attack drones during the night, and that another drone and two cruise missiles prevented them from reaching their targets.

As for Russia, the Defense Ministry noted the interception and destruction of eight Ukrainian drones in the Kursk and Belgorod border regions during the night. The Russian Foreign Ministry also counted that at least 31 civilians have been killed and 256 injured since the start of Ukraine’s invasion of the Kursk region.

Ukraine’s Offensive

On August 6, Ukraine launched its biggest offensive against Russia from abroad since World War II, as it jumped the border and entered western Russia’s Kursk region, backed by drones and heavy weapons, some of which were Western-made. Moscow reported that 131,000 civilians had been displaced from the most dangerous site in Kursk.
