In recent months, Russia has considerably intensified its attacks on the Ukrainian railway network, which is one of the most important pillars of the countryS functioning in conditions of war. The latest attack in the Kharkiv region, in which Russians hit a passenger train with three drones on Tuesday, killing five people, has again drawn attention to the growing risks facing civilian transport.
A video of a man carrying a child out of a burning wagon while a woman can be heard crying in the background has gone viral. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack on a civilian train a “pure act of terrorism”.
“The Russians have significantly increased their ability to kill and terrorize,” the Ukrainian president added, reiterating the need to put more pressure on Moscow - a message that Zelenskyy repeatedly conveys to his allies.
Ukrainian State Railways Ukrzaliznycja is temporarily limiting some connections in response to the worsening security situation. Especially in the kharkiv region, which is becoming a repeated target. Last August, for example, Russian drones severely damaged key infrastructure in the city of Lozova, killing two people and injuring at least ten others, including two children.
the attack, which began around 3 a.m., sparked fires across the city and disrupted rail traffic in Lozów, a strategically important transportation hub. “it was clear they were targeting the station. They wanted to do it. And they did,” she said at the time newspaper The Guardian head of Lozova station Tetjana Tkachenko.
A special mode of operation was therefore introduced on selected routes, especially in regions close to the front or where increased activity of Russian forces was noted. Part of the transport is taken over by bus carriers who provide alternative connections to the final destinations.
As the beginning of 2025, Ukraine has recorded more than 800 attacks on railway infrastructure, during which over 3 thousand objects were damaged – from tracks and traction lines to stations to locomotives and wagons. According to Ukrainian officials, the total damages are around one billion dollars.
“It is a long-term problem. Since the beginning of the war, the Russians have been attacking the train infrastructure in various forms. From mining the track to attacks on moving trains to attacks on station buildings,” Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ukrainian Railways, Serhiy Leshchenko, explained to Seznam Zpravy.
## How to live along the Ukrainian defense line:
In addition, Kramatorsk is the site of one of the biggest railway tragedies of the entire war: in April 2022, a russian rocket attack on the railway station killed dozens of civilians waiting for evacuation trains there. This is also why every further restriction of transport in the region is perceived not only as a logistical problem, but also as a symbol of a growing threat.
