Revised Timelines for‌ LNG Expansion

Russia has postponed its goal of reaching 100 million ⁤tonnes of annual ⁢liquefied natural gas (LNG)⁤ production by “several years,” according⁣ to Deputy ‍prime Minister Alexander Novak‘s statement on December 26, 2025. This ⁣delay is directly attributed to the impact of Western‌ sanctions imposed on Russia’s energy sector following the conflict in Ukraine.

The initial ambition was to capture a ⁤20% share⁢ of the global⁢ LNG market by ‍2030-2035, significantly increasing from its current 8% market share. However, a⁣ recently updated government energy strategy now projects LNG output to reach 90-105 million tonnes by 2030, and 110-130 million tonnes by 2036 – a recalibration reflecting the new geopolitical realities.

2024 Production and Oil/gas Condensate Output

Russia’s LNG production in 2024 reached 34.7 million ⁤tonnes, a 5.4% increase from ⁣the‌ previous year, but ‌slightly below the‌ anticipated 35.2 million tonnes. oil and gas ‍condensate production is expected to remain‍ stable ⁤in 2025, around 516 million tonnes (approximately 10.32 million barrels per day).⁣ This represents an advancement over earlier projections from President Vladimir Putin ⁣in October, ‌which anticipated a 1% ‌decline.

Geopolitical Challenges and Competitive‌ Landscape

The delay in Russia’s LNG expansion is compounded by external pressures. The european Union is set to⁤ implement‌ a ban on Russian LNG imports beginning January 1, ⁢2027.This restriction, ⁣coupled with increased competition⁣ from the United⁢ States - which is‍ actively⁤ expanding its LNG sales to ⁢Europe ‌- and Qatar’s dominance in the Asian market, presents significant hurdles for Russia’s energy ambitions.

Sanctions specifically targeting projects like the Arctic LNG 2 ‍plant have further constrained ⁢Russia’s ability to rapidly ⁤increase LNG⁤ production capacity. the evolving energy landscape‌ necessitates a revised strategy for Russia⁢ to maintain ⁣and grow its position in⁣ the global LNG market.

this report reflects information available as of December 26, 2025.
